The Hermanus Chess Club is extremely proud of two of our members. Ethan Higham and Connor Opperman recently competed in the National Curro Chess Championships, held on the 29th of May 2021. Both players came out tops and won their respective age categories. The tournament was hosted by Curro Sport, and organised by Kenneth Willenberg and Paul Wilson. The event took place on lichess.org, an open source online chess platform. This was one of the largest tournaments that has been hosted with more than 400 players competing from the U/8’s all the way up to U/20’s.
To further add to the excitement, due to the success of this tournament, chess has been awarded ‘Curro Cup status’ in 2021; meaning chess will be one of the twelve sports codes that make up the 2021 Curro Cup competition. The Curro Cup is a first of its kind for Curro Holdings and South Africa and is set to reshape the landscape of school sport within the Curro group of schools. Thousands of Curro learners across the country will compete in national inter-school events for rugby sevens, soccer, netball, hockey, tennis, athletics, swimming, golf, mountain biking – and now chess.
